Chapter Eleven

Callie

I review next month’s schedule for a second time before printing it out. This is my first time doing it completely on my own, and I’m nervous. I asked Sasha if she wanted me to send it to her to approve, but she told me that I was the manager, and she trusted that it was good, especially after I did last month’s schedule.

After sticking one on the bulletin board, I stick copies in everyone’s mailboxes. I look at my watch and see it’s four-thirty. I head back into the office and shut down the computer.

I grab my purse and pull out my phone. I smile and then bite my lower lip when I see I have a text from Asher. This past week we haven’t seen a lot of each other because of his work schedule.

A part of me thinks its Asher’s dad’s doing. You know, make him work odd hours so we don’t see him, but I don’t dare tell Asher that. I already hate that because of me his relationship with his father is strained.

Asher: Hey, I switched my schedule with another deputy, and I’m off tonight. Dinner?

Callie: Sure, do you want to come over?

I watch the black dots bounce.

Asher: I thought I could take you guys out?

Callie: That sounds good. I’m leaving work now.

Asher tells me that he’ll be at our place. It’s a mess right now, but that’s because I’m getting us ready to move into our new place, hopefully soon. We lost the house that had more room inside, but I’m waiting to hear about the other house. It’s only temporary anyway; my master plan is to buy us our first home within a couple of years.

I stop at the bar to say goodbye to Mack and one of the bartenders, Marley. “Hey, guys.” I smile at both and turn to Mack. “The schedule is done, just in case you need any of the wait staff to work the bar.”

“Perfect, thanks.”

Once I’m in my car, I pull out my phone and pull up Asher’s text.

Asher: I’ll meet you there.

The stupid butterflies that take flight in my belly every time I think about him, start flapping their wings. If I close my eyes, I can still feel his lips on mine.

It’s been so long since I was kissed. I’ve never really missed it, until Asher and I kissed. Now that’s all I’ve been able to think about. I don’t know how many times I’ve been caught staring off into space, but it’s been more than I’m comfortable admitting.

When I pull into the driveway, I find Asher talking to Dad with Mason sitting on his shoulders. He waves wildly when he sees me. “Hey, Mommy. Look at me.” His joy is contagious.

“I see that. You’re like a giant.” Asher squats so I can kiss Mason. I look at Asher and ignore the way my heart beats wildly in my chest. “I just need to change.”

He gives me his panty-melting smile that makes my belly dip. I feel my cheeks heat up as I turn, but I stop when Dad looks between the three of us.
